Truck Accidents3 Types of Crashes Unique to Big Trucks

March 31, 20220

Unfortunately, due to their immense size and weight, semi-trucks and other types of commercial trucks tend to cause severe damage when they are involved in accidents.

While truck accidents are not nearly as common as car accidents, they still happen often. There are certain types of accidents that are specific to large trucks, including:

#1 – Underride Crashes

An underride truck crash occurs when a passenger car runs into a commercial truck from behind or on the side and slides beneath the big rig. Since semi-trucks are so much higher than passenger cars, the front and top of the car are often crushed in these types of crashes. Serious or fatal injuries are common with these types of collisions.

#2 – Rollover Crashes

A rollover crash occurs when a truck turns over onto its side or rolls over multiple times. These types of accidents are often tragic and can occur for a number of reasons, including:

  • Truck is improperly weighted
  • Speeding
  • Ineffective cargo loading
  • Necessary maintenance was not performed on the truck
  • Driver suddenly swerves or changes lanes
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions are present
  • Other errors drivers make, such as:
    • Fatigue
    • Distraction
    • Insufficient training

#3 – Jackknife Crashes

A truck jackknifes when the two components of the truck (the cab and the trailer) fold at the joint. This type of crash occurs when something prompts the rear of the trailer to swing ahead, creating a steep angle between the cab and the rear. In this instance, the truck is facing two separate directions.
